A serious rail accident occurred near Toledo, Spain, at 8:54 on Wednesday morning. According to initial reports, an AVE train operated by the state carrier Renfe rammed into the back of an Iryo train. Two carriages of the latter fell off an embankment.
The death toll has risen from an initial ten to 50 people. At least 80 people were injured, and by some accounts as many as 179. There are no Czechs among the victims, Czech Foreign Ministry spokesman Adam Černý said.
Dozens of Spanish rescue vehicles and several helicopters are working at the scene. The regional government has declared an emergency plan. Traffic on the line between Madrid and Andalusia has been halted.
Eyewitnesses describe the terrifying force of the impact: one carriage was thrown into the air. “People were flung out of their seats,” passenger Jesús Jerónimo told the newspaper El País.
