Car in Brno locks itself with one-year-old inside during summer heat

A worrying incident took place in Brno this summer, when a car locked itself with a one-year-old child inside during a spell of hot weather. Police only released details of the incident, which actually happened back in August, this week.

According to police spokeswoman Petra Grulová, the mother had parked the car outside her home and stepped out to open the door and take the child out of the car seat. At that moment, the vehicle locked itself automatically with the baby still inside.

The child was crying hard from the heat

The police spokeswoman said the baby was in severe distress — crying loudly and drenched in sweat. The air temperature in the shade reached 31.5°C, and the car was parked in direct sunlight, raising serious concerns for the child's health and safety.

With the owner's consent, police officers broke the side window and opened the door from inside. A medical team also arrived on the scene to examine the child and check on his condition.

Police warn of the dangers of hot weather

Given the ongoing heat, police are urging the public to be careful. Grulová stressed that under no circumstances should children, elderly people or animals be left in a car, even for a short time — the temperature inside a parked vehicle can reach life-threatening levels within just a few minutes.

She also reminded drivers that cars can lock themselves unexpectedly, so keys should always be kept on hand rather than left inside the vehicle.
