A serious accident occurred on Wednesday around 10:30 on road No. 38715 near the Prudka recreational centre outside Doubravník: a car crossed into the oncoming lane, ran off the road and slammed into a tree on a slope. Behind the wheel was an intoxicated driver who was taking five young footballers to a training camp.
According to the South Moravian Regional Police, the driver's blood alcohol test at the hospital came back positive. One child died at the scene before rescuers even arrived, said Michaela Botová, spokesperson for the emergency medical service. Two children suffered serious injuries and, after receiving first aid, were airlifted to a children's hospital. Two more children and the adult male driver were taken by ambulance for further examination to rule out serious injuries.
The boy who died and the other injured children are all players from FK Střelice, a football club located near Brno. The club's management first commented on the tragedy on social media Wednesday evening. "A tragic accident occurred during our youth team's training camp, in which our young player died. This is an enormous tragedy for all of us, affecting the entire club," the statement read.
Club representatives offered condolences to the family and loved ones of the boy who died, acknowledging that the event "will be written into the club's history in black letters." All club teams withdrew from matches in the following round. "At moments like this, everything else fades into the background. Right now our thoughts are with the families of everyone affected by this tragedy," the club added.
In the comments beneath the club's social media post, users have expressed outrage at the irresponsibility of those accompanying the children, questioning how a driver could carry more passengers in a car than there were seatbelts — and while intoxicated, no less.
Club management said it fully understands the gravity of the situation and has no intention of avoiding responsibility. "We will thoroughly investigate what happened, fully cooperate with the authorities investigating the accident, and draw the appropriate conclusions from this incident. We will also review our procedures and rules for organising youth events so that a tragedy like this never happens again," the club's statement said.
The exact causes and circumstances of the crash are currently being established by traffic police from the Brno-venkov district, said regional police spokesperson Petr Vala.
