Heavy Rain Sweeps Eastern Czechia as Temperatures Plunge More Than 10 Degrees

Most of Czechia saw between 3 and 15 millimeters of rainfall over the past 24 hours, according to the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute. The heaviest rain fell over Moravia and Silesia, where radar estimates put local totals at around 40 millimeters, with some areas even experiencing weak thunderstorms. Northwestern Bohemia got the least rain, with some spots recording no precipitation at all.

Where the Rain Was Heaviest

The highest rainfall totals were recorded in a band stretching from southern Moravia through northern Moravia into Silesia. The weather station in Šternberk reported 36.2 millimeters of rain, while Brno and Rýmařov both saw more than 30 millimeters.

Rain Eased the Drought — But Only Temporarily

The heavy rainfall brought some relief to the region's soil drought, which had reached extreme levels in parts of southeastern Czechia as recently as Wednesday. However, forecasters say little to no rain is expected for the rest of the week, so a significant improvement in drought conditions shouldn't be expected just yet.

A Sharp Cool-Down After the Heat

The cold front also brought a dramatic drop in temperatures. In Moravia and Silesia, where record heat above 30 degrees persisted as recently as Wednesday, temperatures could fall by more than 10 degrees on Thursday. The cooler weather is expected to last through Friday, with a slight warm-up forecast for the weekend.
