Hungarian Archer Shoots Arrow Over a Kilometer — New World Record

60-year-old Hungarian archer Monus from the city of Hajdúnánás in eastern Hungary has set a new world record in long-distance archery. His arrow flew 1,063.59 metres — the competition took place on the dried-up bed of Smith Creek Lake in the US state of Nevada.

According to the archer's own account on his Facebook page, he fired six arrows in total during the competition. Four of them were found at a distance of around 800 metres, while the fifth landed 1,059 metres away. The sixth arrow, however, was only located after a lengthy search — with the help of the judges. It was the measurement of this very arrow that produced the record-breaking result.

"A Lifetime's Work"

"To some, it's just 80 centimetres, but to me, it's a lifetime of work. A world record is born from the fact that a person keeps drawing the bow, day after day, despite fatigue and pain," said Monus, who has for years ranked among the world's top archers in long-distance shooting.

The athlete makes his own bows and arrows and is dedicated to preserving archery traditions and studying the history of the craft. According to him, he shoots around 250,000 arrows a year — during training sessions, competitions and public demonstrations.
