Krčík Leaves Plzeň: The Hero of the Crvena Zvezda Clash Moves to Pardubice

Slovak defender David Krčík has left Viktoria Plzeň and signed with Pardubice. The move was confirmed by Plzeň's sporting director, Martin Vozábal.

Krčík arrived in Plzeň in winter at the invitation of coach Martin Hyský, who already knew the defender well from their time together at Karviná, and he quickly established himself in the starting lineup. However, after a poor start to the season, Hyský was sacked.

The Goal That Decided Europe

New Viktoria boss Radoslav Kovač brought the Slovak defender on as a substitute in extra time during the second leg of the fourth qualifying round against Belgrade's Crvena Zvezda. It was the 27-year-old centre-back who settled the tie, scoring in a 5-1 victory that sent Plzeň through to the Europa League group stage. Despite that heroic contribution, Krčík was left out of the club's squad for the European campaign.

In the Czech league, the defender hadn't featured since matchday three, when he was sent off against Teplice and subsequently suspended. After Kovač took charge and strengthened the backline with new signings — including centre-backs Tobiáš Pališčák and Denis Vavro — the Slovak international risked losing his place in the starting eleven, prompting the club and player to part ways early.

Top Scorer Among Defenders

This spring, Krčík was one of Viktoria's key players and barely left the pitch. Last season he scored 12 league goals, making him the most prolific defender in the entire competition. Krčík was also a reliable penalty taker, and at 191 centimetres tall, he posed a genuine threat in the air. He has earned two caps for the Slovak national team, both this year.

"David always had a great attitude and behaved like a true professional. His last goal, against Crvena Zvezda, was unforgettable. But under the new coach, he probably wouldn't have got as much playing time as he wanted. We're parting ways by mutual agreement," said Viktoria's sporting director Martin Vozábal.

"It feels great. I'm really grateful to Pardubice for showing such strong interest in me. I feel a lot of trust from them, and I want to repay that on the pitch. I know how to score goals, as I proved last season too. So I firmly believe my goals will help Pardubice as well," Krčík himself said.
