Lehečka Stuns O2 Arena: Beats Top American Star at Davis Cup

Czech tennis player Jiří Lehečka defeated American Ben Shelton in a Davis Cup match at a packed O2 Arena in Prague. The victory allowed the Czech team to level the tie against the United States after Jakub Menšík lost the day's opening singles match to his opponent.

According to Lehečka himself, it was one of the best victories of his career. "That was one of the best feelings I've ever had on court," the player admitted afterwards. He said he refused to let the pressure get to him despite his teammate's earlier loss: "I wanted to go out on court with a clear head and focus on every point."

Three match points and a nervous finish

The decisive game wasn't easy for the Czech — Lehečka failed to convert his first two match points against Shelton and only closed out the match on his third attempt. He said he's usually more reserved with his emotions on court, but the atmosphere of the packed O2 Arena made him break that rule.

Lehečka had lost to Shelton in all three of their previous head-to-head meetings, but this time his tactics paid off — he credited his new coach for helping him build the right game plan. The win marked his fifth victory in his last six Davis Cup singles matches, several of them against top-ranked opponents.

Jiří Veselý lends a hand before the match

An interesting detail from the pre-match preparations: the team's main sparring partner, Petr Brunclík, badly twisted his ankle that morning, leaving the squad in urgent need of a left-handed practice partner ahead of the match against two left-handed Americans. Former professional tennis player Jiří Veselý stepped in, personally warming up Lehečka before he took to the court.

As for Saturday's decisive doubles match, Lehečka himself doesn't yet know whether he'll be called upon to play — that decision rests with the team captain. "I'm ready for anything. What makes the Davis Cup unique is that players have to be ready for different roles, even ones that aren't the most comfortable," the tennis player concluded.
