Nurses Near Plzeň Don 1984 Uniforms and Win Over Social Media

At a hospital in the town of Stod near Plzeň, nurses on the long-term care ward, where mostly elderly patients are treated, spent an entire shift dressed in 1984-style uniforms — blue dresses and white starched aprons. The idea was proposed by hospital board assistant Natalya Menshikova, and although the staff were initially sceptical, everyone ended up loving it.

Head nurse Hana Houšková said the staff worked a full shift in the old uniforms. "We looked lovely, neat. It was nostalgic, and the outfits suited the girls incredibly well," she said. According to her, the Soviet-era uniform actually turned out to be more practical than the modern one: back then it was made of pure cotton, so when the clothing got dirty, it was enough to take off the apron and put on a clean one.

A badge on the chest and a cap on the head were mandatory additions to the uniform — though the staff weren't too keen on the cap, so the head nurse didn't force anyone to pull their hair into a bun or ponytail, as 1980s fashion required.

Patients greeted the retro nurses with delight: elderly people remember this kind of uniform well from their youth, and some said that now a "real nurse" had come to see them, showering the staff with compliments.

The initiative also got a huge response on social media: the video on the hospital's Facebook page has already been watched by hundreds of thousands of people, and the post drew a wealth of warm comments. "We're delighted by this kind of interest. When a team gets along well, and ours does, you can do nice things, bring joy to others, and have a bit of fun too," the head nurse concluded.
