Czech President Petr Pavel has called “extremely serious” a statement by Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, who said he does not want Slovakia dragged into a military conflict “because of some Article 5” of the NATO treaty. Earlier this week, Fico voiced concern that the war in Ukraine could escalate into a pan-European armed conflict, one that could pull Slovakia in under Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty — the clause that requires an attack on one alliance member to be treated as an attack on all.
