Prague Football Weekend: The Sparta–Slavia Derby and Battles in the Lower Leagues

Prague is in for a jam-packed football weekend — from second-division fixtures to the season's biggest derby between Sparta and Slavia. The team at Prazsky Denik has put together a rundown of the must-watch matches, starting Friday evening and wrapping up with Sunday's evening headliner.

Kicking Off at Juliska and Vokovice

Friday evening at the Juliska stadium sees Dukla host Jihlava in a clash between two sides from the country's second-tier league. The home team has lost its last two matches and badly needs points.

Saturday morning is worth a trip to Prague's Vokovice district, where third-division sides Aritma and Kralův Dvůr face off — both remain unbeaten through the first three rounds of the season, though the Prague club has yet to register a win.

Sunday morning, all eyes should turn to Žižkov — though not for a match involving the local Viktoria club, but for a second-division fixture between Slavia's B-team and Opava, kicking off at 10:15 AM. This game is notable statistically as well: roughly two dozen players with top-flight experience will take the pitch, having combined for 2,032 appearances in the Czech top division, 37 national team caps, and stints at sixteen foreign clubs between them.

The Season's Marquee Derby

Sunday evening brings the weekend's main event — the Sparta–Slavia derby. Tickets sold out long ago, so most fans will be watching from home or gathered with friends at the pub. The editorial team is predicting a 2:1 win for Slavia and hopes this time the match will pass without incident.
