Prisoner Who Escaped from Čerčany Caught in Prague

Police in Prague have detained a 34-year-old prisoner who escaped on Friday afternoon from an unguarded work site in the town of Čerčany in the Benešov district. The man fled still wearing his prison clothing, but was found in the Czech capital as early as Saturday and returned to continue serving his sentence.

According to police spokeswoman Vlasta Suchánková, a search for the fugitive began immediately after he disappeared. The search paid off on Saturday, when the man was located in Prague. By that evening, police had officially called off the alert for the missing prisoner, since he had already been brought back to the place where he is serving his sentence.

The escape was made possible by the special status of the work site — it was unguarded, and inmates granted this regime work there without constant escort. That is what allowed the man to leave the area unnoticed. Police have not disclosed details about the nature of his crime or the length of his sentence.
