Salmonella in Lidl chicken in Czechia: inspectors found two samples

The Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (SZPI) has detected salmonella in chicken meat from Lidl. The samples were taken at the chain’s store in Ústí nad Labem: two batches, from Romania and Hungary, are affected.

Which batches were found

These are chicken leg quarters from Romania, batch 0092110015, best before 8 August 2026, and chilled boneless chicken thigh fillets from Hungary, batch L226212680, best before 9 August.

Because the expiry date has passed, the meat should no longer be on sale. But the risk remains for those who managed to freeze the products at home. The inspectorate strongly advises not to eat such meat: freezing has practically no effect on bacterial contamination.

Why salmonella is dangerous

Salmonella causes salmonellosis, which usually appears 12–36 hours after infection. Typical symptoms are diarrhoea, a fever of up to 39 degrees, cramping abdominal pain and vomiting. As a rule, the illness passes within seven days, the National Institute of Public Health says on its website.

The course of the disease can vary widely. Some people who are infected have no symptoms at all, and in rare cases the infection leads to severe complications such as sepsis or meningitis.

The risk of a severe course is higher in young children, the elderly, pregnant women and people with weakened immunity. The illness can also leave long-term effects, such as reactive arthritis or irritable bowel syndrome. The mortality rate is about 0.2 percent.
