On Sunday, during the Prague derby in which Sparta fell 0:3 to Slavia on home turf, a black flag reading "RIP General" alongside a Serbian flag briefly appeared behind the goal among the club's most devoted supporters near the end of the match. There is little doubt the banner referred to Ratko Mladić — the former commander of the Bosnian Serb army, convicted of genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes committed during the Yugoslav wars.

Mladić died on Thursday in a prison in The Hague at the age of 84. On the same day, supporters of Belgrade's Crvena Zvezda openly glorified him with a banner during a Europa League qualifying match, triggering a major scandal in European football.

Club Response

Sparta responded to the incident with an official statement. "AC Sparta Prague distances itself from the content of the banner that briefly appeared during Sunday's derby. It was the initiative of a handful of individuals, and the banner was removed immediately afterward. We will assess any further steps internally," said the club's communications director, Pavel Jína.
