Thunderstorm with Lightning and Heavy Rain Sweeps Across Eastern Moravia, No Major Damage Reported

A powerful storm front brought lightning and torrential rain to eastern Moravia overnight on Saturday — witnesses reported that flashes of lightning briefly lit up the sky as if it were daytime. According to the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute, most of the country received between 5 and 25 millimetres of rainfall over the past twelve hours.

The heaviest rain fell in southern Moravia and along the border between Central and Eastern Bohemia, where rainfall in some areas exceeded 30 millimetres. The highest total was recorded at the Bukovinka station in the Dyje river basin, with 35.2 millimetres. The station at Ivanovice na Hané near Vyškov measured 32.9 litres per square metre. It was from this area that the storm front then moved further east.

No Major Damage Reported

The Hydrometeorological Institute had earlier warned of possible hail, gusts of wind up to 90 km/h, and heavy downpours that could cause localised flooding. In the end, however, the storm caused no significant damage.

"Overnight on Saturday, we received reports of two weather-related incidents — fallen trees in Zlín and its surroundings," said Lucie Javořiková, spokesperson for the regional fire brigade.

Weather Set to Improve

The weather is expected to stabilise throughout Saturday. Forecasters predict variable cloudiness, with isolated showers mainly in mountain areas. Air temperatures will range from 21 to 25 degrees Celsius, reaching up to 28 degrees in parts of Moravia. A new wave of cloud cover is expected to move in from the west later in the evening.
