Vémola gears up for 48th cage fight: opponent is German star Vosgröne

Czech mixed martial artist Karlos Vémola, nicknamed "The Terminator," is preparing for the 48th outing of his cage-fighting career. This time his opponent will be German fighter Frederik Vosgröne, a rising star of the Oktagon organisation. The bout will take place at an event in Frankfurt, where organisers are hoping to draw a crowd comparable to the record-breaking 59,148 spectators who packed the same venue for a similar show two years ago.

Over the course of his career, Vémola has lost just nine times in 47 fights. "When I thought about it, I decided — this is my chance. I'm not the kind of person who says no. For me, this is a huge opportunity," the fighter admitted, clearly relishing the prospect of a massive open-air spectacle.

Who is Vosgröne?

In just two fights for Oktagon (five in his career overall), the German fighter has managed to build the kind of name recognition many athletes only dream of after years in the sport. He boasts 650,000 followers on Instagram, and all five of his MMA victories have come by submission — either a joint lock or a choke. "My goal is to one day go down in history as a legend, and that's exactly why I want to fight legends," Vosgröne declared.

He is 11 years younger than his Czech rival and has far less experience, yet he's regarded as one of Europe's strongest grapplers, with a string of successes at prestigious tournaments.

Bookmakers call it a toss-up

Both fighters have been out of the cage for a long time, which is why the bookmakers' odds on this matchup are almost dead even. Vémola makes no secret of how confident he is in his game plan: "I don't think he's going to dance around and box me with jabs. He's going to try to drag me into whatever he's best at. And I'm going to bring pressure he's never experienced in his life. Normally he's the one who creates the pressure, but he's miscalculated here. The perfect scenario for me is — I close the distance, hit him, pick him up, slam him on his head, and finish him right there."

Vosgröne shot back just as sharply: "I've got nothing to lose. I won't give up — I'd rather let him break my arm or leg. I'm going to push past the limits of human endurance. Good luck to him if he wants to drag me into deep water — I've been there plenty of times. How many times has he?"

Coming back after the trilogy with Végh

Oktagon boss Ondřej Novotný notes that for the German fighter, beating the Czech "Terminator" would be a billboard moment: "If he loses to Karlos, his earnings and star status will take a hit. Every defeat, especially in this sport, sets you back."

Vémola, the first-ever Czech fighter to compete in the UFC, retired from competitive fighting last June after his trilogy of bouts with Slovak rival Attila Végh. Yet the motivation to return to the cage found him again. Vosgröne, incidentally, visited Vémola at his residence "Vémoland" last year, where the two fed lions, trained together, and even recorded a joint podcast — but their friendly relationship will stay outside the cage. "I honestly don't know what story this fight is going to tell. It could be over in a minute for either guy, or it could be three rounds of absolute mayhem," Novotný muses.
