Adapterra Awards Names 18 Finalists: Anyone Can Vote for the People

The organizers of the Czech environmental award Adapterra Awards have announced the 18 finalists for this year's competition, which recognizes projects addressing climate change adaptation. Until October 1, anyone can vote on the competition's website for their favorite project — the winner of the public vote will receive the People's Choice Award along with a cash prize of 50,000 CZK.

Since 2019, the Adapterra Awards have been presented by Nadace Partnerství in cooperation with expert partner Integra Consulting. The competition highlights projects that help cities, towns and rural areas cope with the effects of climate change — including drought, heatwaves, flash floods and soil erosion. The winning entries are meant to serve as models for other municipalities and landowners.

Who's in the running

In the "Buildings" category, contenders include a renovated kindergarten in Lubná near Frýdlant nad Ostravicí, the energy-efficient headquarters of Czech Games Edition in Prague's Hloubětín district, new rescue service bases in southern Moravia, and the Diorit residential complex in Brno's Komín district.

The "Settlements" category features a revitalized park in Brno's Černovice district, blooming meadows between housing estates in Prague 12, the MetroFarm community gardens in Prague, and a school teaching garden in Červená Voda.

This year, organizers introduced a new "Agriculture" category for the first time, with five projects entered. According to organizer representative Ander, this category will recognize those who see soil not merely as a production surface, but as a vital tool for retaining water, improving the microclimate, and supporting biodiversity.

Who will decide the winners

Winners in the main categories will be chosen by a jury of independent experts. Winners in each category will receive cash and material prizes from the competition's partners.

Last year, 57 projects were submitted to the competition. Among those recognized were a flood-management park in Židlochovice near Brno and a landscape restoration project near Velká Bíteš in the Žďár region. That year's People's Choice Award went to a project restoring the site of a former summer cinema in Nový Jičín.

This season's winners will be announced on November 5 at the annual Adapterra conference in Prague, which will focus on the theme of heavy rainfall and drought.
