Manchester City close to record-breaking deal for Chelsea

Argentine midfielder and 2022 World Cup winner Enzo Fernandez is closing in on a move from Chelsea to Manchester City. The London club has already given the 25-year-old the green light to undergo a medical with his prospective new employers — with the English transfer window set to slam shut at midnight tonight.

Fernandez signed for Chelsea three years ago on an eight-and-a-half-year contract. His move from Benfica back in 2023 set a Premier League transfer record at the time, with Chelsea paying £106.8 million for his services.

Who holds the record now

That record didn't last long: last year Liverpool smashed it, paying Newcastle £125 million for Swedish striker Alexander Isak. Should the Fernandez deal with Manchester City go through, it could once again rewrite the history books for the priciest transfers in English football.
