Ostrava Fraudster Made Money Selling Sea Containers That Didn't Exist

Police in Ostrava-Vítkovice have uncovered a large-scale sea container scam that ran for several years. According to investigators, around ten people and companies fell victim to the fraudster, with total damages exceeding CZK 2.5 million.

Stealing from His Own Employer

The case began last July, when a container dealer reported to police that dozens of units had gone missing. Police spokeswoman Eva Michálková explained that a stocktake revealed containers had been disappearing from the warehouse since 2022. An internal investigation pointed to one employee, whose contract was subsequently terminated.

Around the same time, police began receiving reports from other victims who complained that they had ordered a certain number of containers but received only part of what they'd paid for. Detectives suspected the same man was behind all the cases — and it turned out they were right.

Running a Business on Other People's Containers

According to police, the former employee, drawing on his industry experience, set up his own money-making scheme. Through classified ad websites, he offered sea containers for sale that he never actually owned.

Here's how it worked: once he had a firm order from a client, the fraudster would rent the required number of containers from another company, pay a deposit of a few thousand crowns, collect the containers, and immediately resell them to his customer.

In other cases, he took advance payments worth hundreds of thousands of crowns from clients but never delivered the containers at all — or delivered only part of the order.

A Confession Under the Weight of Evidence

During the investigation, the man initially refused to cooperate, but eventually confessed in full once confronted with the accumulated evidence. Police say he spent the money on personal expenses.

The fraudster has been charged with fraud, theft and embezzlement. He faces up to eight years in prison.
