Prague Police Foil Planned Ambush on Slavia Fans Near Letná Park

Prague police prevented a planned attack on a group of Slavia Prague fans marching to the stadium at Letná. According to police, around 20 men pried up paving stones near the Metronome monument, put on strike gloves, and began covering their faces — apparently preparing to pelt the march with stones.

Police identified and detained every member of the group. Officers also headed off two other potential clashes on Korunovační Street, and one person was detained for a minor offense.

Heightened security measures

About five hundred Slavia fans were escorted from the National Theatre to Letná by fully equipped riot police officers. Police temporarily suspended car and tram traffic in the city for the duration of the march.

The match had already been classified by police as high-risk — not least because of May's Prague derby at Eden Stadium, when hundreds of Slavia fans stormed the pitch and some attacked Sparta players. Saturday's security operation involved hundreds of officers, including K9 units, mounted police, and an anti-conflict team. Sparta additionally spent 700,000 crowns on match security — roughly a third more than it typically allocates for a routine Champions League fixture.
