Putin and Trump hold phone call: Kremlin says Russia poses no threat to Europe

Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump held a phone conversation in which they discussed the situation on the front in Ukraine and prospects for restoring Russian-American relations. The Kremlin confirmed the call through Putin's aide Yuri Ushakov, whose remarks were cited by the TASS news agency.

What Putin said

According to Ushakov, Putin assured Trump that Russia harbors no hostile plans toward Europe. The Russian leader described talk of a "Russian threat" as a convenient pretext used by the European Union to boost support for Kyiv and increase military spending.

Putin also told his American counterpart that restoring relations between Moscow and Washington would benefit both countries. In addition, the Russian president, according to the aide, gave an "objective analysis" of the situation in the zone of the so-called special military operation — the official Russian term for the invasion of Ukraine — and spoke about the prospects of achieving its stated goals.

A hint at Washington's role

Ushakov called the phone conversation "constructive" and "very open." He said the two leaders also touched on what the United States could realistically do to help bring the fighting to a swift end, though the presidential aide did not disclose any specific details.
