First lady Melania Trump hosted delegations from Russia and Ukraine at the White House on Thursday, Nov. 5. It was a rare face-to-face encounter that followed a humanitarian ceasefire she is credited by the White House with helping to broker, according to NBC News and the BBC.
NBC reported that it appears to be the first time both sides have met in person at the White House. What the gathering was meant to achieve was unclear before it began, and it was not stated whether the president or his envoys would attend.
The BBC said the delegations include ombudsmen who were involved in the evacuation mission, along with senior officials. For Ukraine, those named are human rights ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets and Davyd Arakhamia, who leads President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s faction in parliament. NBC noted that Ukraine had not officially confirmed its delegation, though Arakhamia’s office said he would attend.
For Russia, the Kremlin said the delegation would consist of Yana Lantratova, the human rights commissioner, and Kirill Dmitriev, President Vladimir Putin’s special envoy. The BBC described Dmitriev as a businessman close to the Kremlin who has often taken part in U.S.-brokered talks.
UA.NEWS, citing the White House press office, reported that the meeting began on Thursday. It said Melania Trump expressed hope that the Oleshky truce would be a first step toward lasting peace.
NBC reported that the humanitarian ceasefire began Oct. 27 and lasted six days. It allowed hundreds of people to be evacuated from Oleshky, a town in Ukraine’s southern Kherson region. About 2,000 residents were still there and, according to NBC, were on the brink of starvation. Both sides held fire throughout, which NBC called the largest de-escalation effort since Russia’s full-scale invasion in early 2022.
The White House said Melania Trump independently initiated contact between the two countries and secured the ceasefire, calling it an unprecedented diplomatic initiative by a first lady. The BBC reported that both Russian and Ukrainian officials have repeatedly thanked her, but neither side has explained what her role involved. Pope Leo XIV and some officials in Europe also pressed for the truce, NBC reported.
On Wednesday, Zelenskyy awarded her the Order of Princess Olga, 1st class, for what the decree called a significant personal contribution to humanitarian support for Ukraine. The BBC said the decree also cited her work on behalf of Ukrainian children affected by the war. In 2025, she said an open channel of communication had been established with Putin to help reunite displaced Ukrainian children with their families, the BBC noted. According to Ukraine, almost 20,000 children have been illegally sent to Russia and Belarus since the 2022 invasion.
For ordinary readers, the meeting has no direct effect on prices or travel. Its significance is diplomatic and humanitarian. The truce brought civilians out of a besieged town, and the White House event shows that senior Russian and Ukrainian figures are willing to sit in the same room under U.S. sponsorship.
The wider picture remains difficult, according to NBC. Talks led by U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner have stalled over the Donbas region, which Putin wants to take in its entirety. Ukraine still holds key cities there and has refused to give up the land. NBC also reported that U.S.-Ukraine relations hit their worst point since the war began, after Trump signed a deal to buy Russian diesel and waived new sanctions on Moscow last month. Kyiv complained of gaps in intelligence sharing and a slowdown in Starlink service. Ukraine has since said both were restored.
The political backdrop in Washington has also shifted. NBC reported that Democrats captured full control of Congress in the midterm elections, which it described as a setback for Trump and his foreign policy. The Kremlin said it sincerely hoped Trump would continue his peace-building efforts. Ukraine gave no official response, though NBC said some people there voiced cautious optimism that the result could ease pressure from Washington.
The U.S. is set to lead renewed trilateral talks with Russia and Ukraine in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, next week. The BBC said it will be the first such meeting since February. Witkoff said on Monday that the talks will focus on postwar security agreements and de-escalation.
Zelenskyy said Tuesday that the Abu Dhabi round will take place at the team level. He said Kyiv hopes it will open the way to a meeting of leaders, which he argued is the format that could settle the key issues and secure lasting peace and guaranteed security.
