Three Cars Collide on D1 Motorway Near Ostrava, Two Burst Into Flames

A collision involving three cars occurred at the 350th kilometre of the D1 motorway near Ostrava, with two of the vehicles catching fire afterwards. According to preliminary police findings, the crash happened during an overtaking manoeuvre, police spokeswoman Nikol Bočková said.

Petra Lukášová, spokeswoman for the Moravian-Silesian fire brigade, said two cars burst into flames immediately after the collision. Firefighters brought the blaze under control within five minutes of arriving at the scene, with full extinguishing and mop-up work taking roughly another ten minutes.

Five Injured

According to Lukáš Humpl, spokesman for the ambulance service, five people were injured in the crash. All sustained minor to moderate injuries, remained conscious throughout, and were not in life-threatening condition. After receiving first aid at the scene, the injured were taken to hospital.

Clearing the Wreckage

Since the wrecked cars had to be removed from the road, the fire crew commander called in a special recovery vehicle, an Omars, to help with the job. Firefighters used it to flip one of the cars — which had ended up on its roof — back onto its wheels. All three damaged vehicles were subsequently moved onto a single lane. Once the carriageway had been cleared of debris and spilled fluids, traffic on the D1 towards Brno resumed, though with restrictions in place.
