Support for US President Donald Trump among Americans has fallen to 32% — the lowest figure of his entire political career, according to a new public opinion poll. Reuters reports that one of the main reasons is dissatisfaction, even among Republicans, with how Trump is handling the rising cost of living, which has been further fueled by the unpopular conflict with Iran.

Republicans Are Losing Patience Too

The Reuters/Ipsos poll, which surveyed 1,277 adult Americans, wrapped up on Sunday. It found that 73% of Republicans approve of Trump's performance as president — down from 82% a week earlier. Overall approval for the head of the White House stood at 35% the previous week.

Trump returned to the White House in January last year, promising to rein in inflation and end foreign wars. According to Reuters, just hours after his inauguration, his approval rating in Reuters/Ipsos polling reached 47%. Trump's popularity has now dropped lower than it ever did for his Democratic predecessor, Joe Biden, the agency notes. Biden's presidency was also marked by a sharp spike in inflation, and the former president eventually ended his re-election campaign following a disastrous debate performance that raised doubts about his ability to serve given his advanced age.

Prices and Iran — the Key Pain Points

Only 17% of respondents approved of Trump's handling of the cost-of-living issue. Americans themselves believe this will be the decisive topic in the November 3 elections, in which Trump's Republicans will be fighting to defend their slim majority in both chambers of Congress.

Among Republicans, Trump still enjoys strong support on immigration policy, with 79% of party members backing his approach. However, only 36% of Americans overall approve of his immigration course, while 55% disagree with it. Some Republican lawmakers warn that Trump's aggressive campaign to deport undocumented migrants could cost the party votes among voters whose relatives — including a portion of Latino Americans — moved to the US only recently.

Only 24% of Americans approve of Trump's approach to the conflict with Iran, the poll found.
