Trump Suggests Renaming the Strait of Hormuz After Himself

US President Donald Trump has proposed renaming the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz in his own honor. "Since it's now under U.S. control, shouldn't we rename the Strait of Hormuz to the TRUMP STRAIT?" he wrote on his social media platform in his signature style, adding that thanks to the new name, the strait would become "hotter than ever" — just like America itself. He wrapped up the post with his trademark line: "Thank you for your attention to this matter!"

This is far from Trump's first attempt to rewrite geographical names on the world map. His administration previously introduced the designation "American Gulf" instead of the Gulf of Mexico, and more recently the president ordered that Lake Ontario be called the "American Lake."

Canada Objects, But the Maps Are Already Changing

Canada has refused to recognize the renaming of its lake, but Google and Apple have already updated their maps accordingly. In Czechia, the new names introduced at Trump's initiative are now shown in parentheses next to the original ones.

During his second presidential term, Trump's name has already been attached to the Kennedy Center, the building of the United States Institute of Peace, and a renamed airport in Florida.

Claims Over the Strait of Hormuz

In recent weeks, Trump has repeatedly threatened that the US would assert sovereignty over the strategically crucial Strait of Hormuz. In mid-August, he even published a map marking the strait as "new US territory." Iran responded sarcastically, suggesting that Trump appeared to have lost his mind.
