Zelensky Says Ukraine Is Ready for an Energy Truce Following Meeting With Trump

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Ukraine is ready for an energy truce with Russia. He made the statement after meeting with US President Donald Trump on Tuesday at the United Nations headquarters in New York.

Patriot Missiles and Trump's Position

At the start of the talks, journalists asked Trump whether it would be possible to set up production of missiles for Patriot air defense systems on Ukrainian territory. "We'll be discussing that now. Ukrainians are very capable people," the US president replied. Trump had previously promised Ukraine a license to produce such missiles, but in July he softened his stance, saying that providing something like that would be "very difficult." It's worth noting that setting up domestic missile production wouldn't solve Ukraine's more pressing problem — the current shortage of air defense ammunition.

Will All of Ukraine's Territory Be Returned?

Reporters also asked Trump whether his statement from last year — that Ukraine, in his view, could reclaim all of its territory — still stood. "I think they'll reach an agreement, and I don't want to say what it will look like. We talk about it a lot, including in conversations with President Putin, and I think something will happen," Trump replied. He added that Ukrainians are "very good fighters" and "can really be proud of themselves, no matter what happens."

According to Reuters, Trump also said that Putin is ready to negotiate an end to the war.
