Blümel after his home debut for Sparta: "In the Extraliga, nothing wins itself"

Sparta Prague hockey club played its first home game of the season featuring a new forward with previous NHL experience — 26-year-old Blümel. The player praised the incredible atmosphere in the stands but admitted the result was far from what the team had hoped for.

"The atmosphere was unreal. I've seen something like this in the NHL, but here the fans keep supporting you throughout the whole game, and that's even better," Blümel shared his impressions.

A strong start and a lost tempo

Sparta came out of the gate aggressively: in the opening shifts they pinned their opponents in their own zone and piled on the shots, and it looked as if the home debut would go exactly as planned. However, the tempo gradually dropped, and the team began paying for lapses that the opponents punished skillfully.

"In the first few shifts we flew onto the ice, we had pressure and shots. And then we just stopped playing. Maybe we thought everything after that would just happen on its own," Blümel reflected. That, in his view, is exactly what let the team down. "The Extraliga is at a level where nothing just happens by itself. I think there's always someone out there playing at full intensity for all sixty minutes, and unfortunately, this time we didn't," the forward admitted.

A wild shootout and the first goal

The second period turned into a real shootout. Sparta clawed back from 1:3 to level it at 3:3 — with Blümel himself scoring the equalizer, notching his first goal in the club's jersey. But the joy didn't last long, as Mladá Boleslav pulled ahead again.

That first goal in the red-and-white jersey felt more like a small consolation than a major personal milestone. "It's a small consolation. Of course I'm glad I scored my first goal for Sparta, but after the match I'm more focused on the things I could have done much better," the forward admitted.

Blümel dissected his own performance in even more detail than the goal itself. At the same time, he's getting exactly what he expected from his new club: he's playing alongside strong teammates, seeing power-play time, and feeling confident on the ice. The forward has consistently been deployed on the first line and on the power-play unit.

"I'm playing with good guys, I'm getting power-play minutes, I'm getting plenty of ice time. I feel good out there, I get into scoring chances. But then some silly mistake happens," Blümel admitted candidly, searching for flaws in his own game. Those are precisely the kind of mistakes he intends to avoid going forward — his first home night reminded him that, for all the ambition, the strong roster and the fantastic fans, nothing in the Extraliga wins itself. "I need to be more focused and play better," Sparta's summer signing concluded.
