Bořšice na Moravě named Czech Village of the Year

The village of Bořšice, nestled in the foothills of the Chřiby hills near Uherské Hradiště, has won the nationwide "Village of the Year" competition. According to the contest organisers, the village won over the jury with its comprehensive approach across every judging category — from care for children and the elderly to a mindful preservation of local traditions.

Organisers say Bořšice has spent years building quality conditions for children, families and older residents, while paying equal attention to public spaces, infrastructure and long-term development. The commission was particularly impressed by the thoughtfully reconstructed kindergarten and primary school complex, which now includes a new nursery group and sits alongside a cultural and sports centre. A renovated branch of the local art school is soon to be added to the site.

Local produce and care for residents

The jury also singled out the village's cooperation with local farmers: the school canteen sources its food primarily from local suppliers, and its buffet-style serving system teaches children independence and responsibility for how much food they actually take. The commission likewise praised Bořšice's care for elderly residents and people with disabilities.

The organisers noted that the winning village stands out for more than just its built environment. Bořšice is connected to neighbouring Zlechov by the Saint Methodius cycling trail, lined with eight sculptures inspired by the era of Great Moravia and the legacy of Saints Cyril and Methodius.

Traditions and a record number of entries

The jury also praised the villagers' devotion to tradition: village festivals featuring young people in traditional costume and a brass band, the local brass band "Bořšičanka," and the folk ensemble "Pentla." According to the organisers, Bořšice is a clear example that a village is made up of more than streets, buildings and finished projects — above all, it is its people, who take an interest in their surroundings, know how to work together, and stay connected to what previous generations built.

This year's "Village of the Year" competition drew 245 municipalities from across Czechia — the highest number in the past decade. The results were announced on Saturday afternoon in the village of Písečná in the Orlickoústecko region, last year's winner. Thirteen villages — winners of their respective regional rounds — competed in the final. As the national champion, Bořšice will now represent Czechia at the European Village Renewal Competition.
