Motörhead Legend Lemmy and His Nazi Memorabilia Collection: Provocation or Bizarre Hobby?

The founder of the legendary band Motörhead, Ian Fraser Kilmister — known to the world as Lemmy — collected Nazi memorabilia throughout his life and repeatedly had to explain himself to journalists and fans over it. His apartment in West Hollywood was filled with swastika flags, Wehrmacht eagle insignia, ceremonial daggers and other Third Reich relics, and he even mounted an Iron Cross on his Rickenbacker 4000 bass guitar.

The musician consistently denied any sympathy for Nazism. "The people who collect this stuff aren't idiots. There are Masters, PhDs, professors among them," Lemmy once said, adding that what drew him in was not ideology but aesthetics: "Throughout history it's always the bad guys who had the best uniforms — Napoleon, the Confederacy, the Nazis. If the British Army had decent uniforms, I'd collect those instead. But what do they have? Khaki — makes soldiers look like swamp toads."

He also pointed out that he'd had his first Black girlfriend back in 1967, followed by several others. "I just don't understand racism — I've never seen it as something rational. Same goes for Nazism," the musician insisted, telling Rolling Stone magazine: "I collect stuff. I don't collect ideas."

The Dresden Provocation and German Scandal

Lemmy's collection also included Airfix model warplanes — during the 1979 Bomber tour, Motörhead brought full-size replicas of them onstage. At a concert in Dresden, witnesses say the singer greeted the crowd with a provocative line: "Good evening, Dresden! I bet you haven't seen anything like this in a while!" Given the city's history, the remark landed especially harshly — in February 1945, British and American aircraft dropped more than 3,900 tonnes of bombs on Dresden across four massive raids involving nearly 1,300 bombers.

In 2008, one of the musician's provocations nearly resulted in criminal charges. In press photos taken to promote Motörhead's appearance at the Wacken Rocks Seaside festival in the German town of Aurich, Lemmy appeared wearing a Nazi-era cap. According to German media, prosecutors opened an inquiry, since possessing Nazi symbols — and anything that could be construed as promoting the movement — is generally illegal in Germany. Aurich police spokeswoman Sabine Kamann initially said it would be up to prosecutors to decide whether to pursue the case, but authorities ultimately confiscated the photos, preventing their use for promotional purposes.

Scandalous Stories from Fellow Musicians

Al Jourgensen, frontman of the American band Ministry, recalled a bizarre and equally shocking episode after a 1995 concert in Austin: "I knocked on Motörhead's bus. No one answered, so I opened the door myself. Inside, Lemmy was dressed in a Gestapo uniform, whipping a naked girl with a riding crop. Both of them were absolutely thrilled. I apologized and shut the door," the musician recounted.

Despite the scandalous collection and provocative antics, there has never been any proof that Lemmy genuinely sympathized with Nazi ideology. On the contrary, in numerous interviews he consistently condemned racism and wrote plenty of songs against authoritarianism and ideological extremism — though critics note that his lyrics didn't always show a fully consistent political stance.
