Brno Is Building a CZK 1.84 Billion Tram Line with a Unique Loop

Construction continues in Brno on a new tram line that will connect the Bystrc district with Kamechy. The project is valued at CZK 1.84 billion excluding VAT, 85% of which is covered by a European grant. According to the Brno Transport Company (DPMB), after a two-month complete suspension of service, trams on Line 1 have returned to Bystrc, though the new Jehnická stop is not yet fully finished.

Passengers are already stepping onto the newly paved platform, but construction is still underway around the stop: excavators are moving earth, and crews are putting the finishing touches on the turning loop, from which the line toward Kamechy will be built further. The main complaint from locals is the lack of benches. "You get off here and there's nowhere to sit. When I'm waiting for a bus or need a short rest, it's unpleasant," said Eva, a pensioner who regularly transfers here.

According to the builders, benches will only appear by the end of October. Sidewalks still need to be completed, shelters installed, and new trees planted. "Some of the sidewalks are still being finished at the moment, so construction work will of course continue," said DPMB CEO Miloš Havránek.

An Unusual Route Through the Loop

The reconstruction of the tram line has also changed the direction of travel through the turning loop. Trams now enter it from the left and move clockwise — a unique solution for Brno. As Havránek explained, this was done so that the boarding stop matches the one where trams arriving from the Kamechy direction will stop.

The new line to Kamechy will stretch 1.4 kilometers and will include three stops — Rudá, Říčanská, and Kamechy.

The Tunnel Is Being Built from Both Ends

Beyond the loop at Jehnická, the next section of the route is already under construction. Builders are deepening the cutting that will lead the tracks to the already-bored tunnel, while retaining walls are being erected and sewer lines laid. Inside the tunnel, crews are continuously working on waterproofing, reinforcement, and concreting the walls.

So far, 22 of the 40 eight-meter tunnel segments have been completed. Next, builders will need to lay cable ducts, install emergency walkways, and lay the rails. According to the plan, the first passengers will be able to travel through the tunnel and the entire new line by the end of next year.
