Egypt Hit by Near 50°C Heat, Shattering September Record

In southern Egypt earlier this week, thermometers climbed nearly 10 degrees above the September norm. Aswan set a new national record for the month, edging out the previous mark by two tenths of a degree.

The extreme heat also swept through the country's coastal areas. A weather station in Marsa Alam recorded 40°C — around six degrees above the seasonal average for September, a figure more typical of the height of summer.

Saudi Arabia Just Misses Its Own Record

Across the Red Sea in Saudi Arabia, temperatures reached 49°C, falling just four tenths of a degree short of the national record. The reading was as much as 15 degrees above normal.

Overnight temperatures in the region barely dipped below 30°C. Heat approaching the 50°C mark was also recorded in northern Sudan. Forecasters expect temperatures across the region to ease back to more typical levels in the coming days.
