Motorcycle Registration Fees to Nearly Double: Czech Transport Ministry Raises Charges from 2027

Starting January 1, 2027, registering a motorcycle or trailer in Czechia will cost significantly more. The change comes as part of an amendment to the law on vehicle operation currently being prepared by the Ministry of Transport. At present, registering a motorcycle up to 50 cubic centimeters costs 300 crowns, while more powerful bikes cost 500 crowns. After the reform, both categories will pay the same amount — 800 crowns, matching the fee for passenger cars.

The price hike comes amid record demand for motorcycles in the country. According to the Association of Car Importers (SDA), motorcycle registrations rose by 26.3% year-on-year, from 19,074 to 24,103 units, with July alone showing a 25% annual increase.

What Else Will Get More Expensive

Besides motorcycles, fees for trailer owners will also climb: registering a light trailer under 750 kg will rise from 500 to 800 crowns, while heavier trailers will go from 700 to 800 crowns. Exporting a vehicle abroad will cost 600 crowns instead of 450, and deregistration under the European directive will jump to 200 crowns from the current 50. Replacing a license plate (two plates for a car) will rise from 450 to 600 crowns. Some fees, however, will actually drop — for instance, a bike-rack plate will fall from 600 to 300 crowns, as will the cost of a duplicate for a damaged plate.

Why Digitalization Is Needed

The ministry attributes the fee increases to upcoming digitalization of services. Planned changes include the ability to transfer license plates between vehicles, delivery of plates to parcel lockers, and the elimination of the requirement to hand in old plates at a government office — owners will be able to dispose of them independently. It will also become possible to handle vehicle re-registration and the issuance of a third plate — for example, for a bike rack — entirely online.

According to the explanatory memorandum accompanying the amendment, developing the necessary information systems will cost 21 million crowns excluding VAT for the vehicle registry, plus another 6 million crowns for the transport portal. In addition, allowing owners to dispose of plates at home means the state will lose revenue from scrap metal sales — in 2025, the government earned nearly 3.4 million crowns from old plates turned in for recycling.

Municipalities Set to Lose Out

Financial consultant Martin Lev believes the state is simply looking for new ways to fill the budget: "There's nowhere else to get money except through taxes and fees. Aside from piling on more debt, the state has no other source of income. To keep the budget in check, taxes and fees will have to rise in the future, and sharply — that's the price of a growing national debt."

Currently, registration fees flow into the budgets of municipalities with extended powers, but after the reform, applications submitted online through the transport portal will go directly to the state treasury. The ministry estimates that around 20% of applications will initially be processed this way, bringing the state budget roughly 259 million crowns a year. Officials claim this will also ease the workload for municipal staff.

The Union of Towns and Municipalities of the Czech Republic disagrees. According to the union, online applications are often incomplete or contain errors, requiring additional follow-up and communication with applicants — meaning they can actually take longer to process than in-person requests. Municipalities are also criticizing another government initiative: stripping them of the net profit from traffic radar enforcement, leaving them only enough to cover costs. As Josef Soumar, deputy mayor of Písek, put it, if the state wants to profit from fines, it should hire its own staff and change the law itself.
